Sign in Tahrir: "Mubarak: If you go away, I go home. The End."

As a member of this so-called "social networking generation", I thought I would share what Egyptians are saying on Facebook 15 minutes after the end of Mubarak's epic failure of a speech (Facebook being a huge impetus behind the expression, organization, and momentum of this uprising). There were celebrations before the speech and great, great expectations of what Mubarak would say, and, more importantly, what he would do (step down, specifically).

Instead, much of his speech sounded exactly like what he said last week in his public address. The VP is speaking now, saying that “the president has expressed that he understands the seriousness of the situation.” It is beyond frustrating to hear the country’s leaders insult the dignity and intelligence of the Egyptian people with empty words and condescension. Here's what some of those people have to say:

· “He is not leaving this country as one piece. His speech was "me me me all about me". His personal pride & ego are making him removed from reality.”

· “Long silence and incredible disbelief.”

· “It would have been more beneficial for me to watch the repeated episodes of the Simpsons!”

· “So he makes us wait how many hours just to say "I'll die here?"

· “[The speech was] reckless and stupid. Is there any specific part of the phrase "the people want to overthrow the regime" that [Mubarak] does not understand?”

· “To Tahrir first thing tomorrow! ... if not tonight!”

· “NO COMMENT

· “Mubarak: "The situation is not about me; it is not about Hosni Mubarak." Which [square] has he been watching the past two weeks?”

Pray for Egypt. People are angry, rightfully so. I don't know what tomorrow - or tonight, for that matter - will bring. I'll end with the words of one protester and photographer, "Remember everyone, be peaceful tomorrow. He's apparently trying to deliberately provoke the protesters to be violent so he has an excuse to kill more people. This is clearly his strategy. Our numbers tomorrow need to be overwhelming tomorrow but remain peaceful. Mubarak will be defeated. We just need to remain steadfast and patient. History is on our side."
